What is eBay Active Content?

What is active content?

  • Active content includes JavaScript, Flash, plug-ins and form actions (e.g. buttons) that have been used to enhance the listings with dynamic features and widgets.
  • Some examples of active content:
    • Embedded buyer Feedback
    • Cross-promoting item widget
    • Dynamic drop down menu
    • Social sharing icons
    • Freight quotes
    • Image galleries or carousels

Why has eBay decided to ban the use of active content?

eBay is going to ban the use of active content to enhance eBay’s security and to provide better user experience on mobile devices.

When will this happen?

  • eBay will start limiting the use of active content in all new listings across all devices in March 2017
  • All listings with active content will be removed or blocked in June 2017

What does it mean to you?

What do you need to do?

  • Most custom eBay design contains active content which will be removed or blocked by eBay late 2017. If you suspect this might be your case, you will need to update your eBay store & listing template to comply with the new eBay active content policy.
  • Contact us for a free checkup and non active content solutions!

What does this mean to Rainstorm existing clients?

  • All eBay Designs built in August 2016 and onward are active content compliant.
  • eBay Designs built before August 2016 might contain active content. Please contact us to arrange the transitions.

How an eBay design looks like without active content?

Some design features might not be available. HOWEVER, please note eBay will not ban the features and widgets, instead, they will only ban some certain technologies.
Therefore, we will continue to offer the following great features on all eBay designs without the use of active content technologies (JavaScript, Flash, plug-ins and form actions):
